What are we going to do for Father’s Day?

(父の日に何をしようか?)

Midori:
Let’s invite my father over for dinner.

(夕食に招待しない?)

Jim:
Is there anything I can do to help?

(僕に何か手伝える事ある?)

Midori:
I can’t think of anything now, but I will keep you posted.

(今、何も思いつかないわ。でも何か浮かんだらお願いするわ)

《VOL.2》

Eyes are bigger than your stomach.  目が欲しいだけ

Midori:

I’m looking forward to the star festival this weekend.

(週末の七夕まつり、楽しみだワ)

Jim:

I can’t wait to try all the festive food!

(屋台の食べ物、待ちきれないヨ)

Midori:

Be careful, last year your eyes were bigger than your stomach.

(でも気をつけてネ! 去年、目が欲しいだけだったでしょう)

Jim:

Don’t worry, this year my stomach is much bigger.

(心配しないで、今年ボクのお腹は大きくなっているからネ)

Sky high.  値上り

Jim:

What do you want to do for the summer holiday?

(夏休み何したい?)

Midori:

Let’s invite our friends over for a BBQ!

(友達をバーベキューに招待しましょうよ)

Jim:

That’s a good idea because fuel cost are sky high.

(それはいいね、ガソリンの値上りはすごいからね)

《VOL.4》

Penny saved is a penny earned.  1円を節約する事は1円を貯める事

Jim:

We really need to paint our front porch.

(僕たちフロントポーチを塗らなくちゃならないよ)

Midori:

Do you know a good painter?

(誰か良いペンキ屋さん知ってるの?)

Jim:

Yes, but I want to paint it myself this to save money.

(うん、でも今回は節約するために自分で塗りたいんだ)

Midori:

Good idea! A penny saved is a penny earned.

(良い考えね!1円を節約する事は1円を貯める事ですものね)

《VOL.5》

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.  捕らぬ狸の皮算用

Jim:

Halloween is coming!

(ハロウィーンが来るね)

Midori:

Were you excited to go “Trick or Treating” when you were a child?

(子供の時、トリック オア トリートに行くのワクワクした?)

Jim:

Yes, I would think of how many houses we would go to and imagine how much candy I would get.

(ウン、何軒くらい訪ねてどの位キャンディーを貰えるか考えてたよ)

Midori:

Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to count your chickens before they hatch.

(卵が孵る前に数えるな(捕らぬ狸の皮算用)って誰も言わなかった?)

Finger licking good.  と~~っても美味しいという表現

Midori:

Guess what, Thanksgiving Day is coming this month.

(ねえ、今月は感謝祭が来るわね)

Jim:

Oh, that’s right. I miss my mon’s Pineapple cake.

(ああ、そうだね、ママのパイナップルケーキ懐かしいなぁ)

Midori:

I will ask her for the recipe.

(私、ママにレシピを聞いてみるわ)

Jim:

Great! That cake is finger licking good.

(あのケーキはフィンガーリッキング、指をなめちゃう美味しさなんだよ)

Better to give than to receive.  受けるより与える

Midori:

Christmas is coming soon.

(クリスマス、もうすぐね)

Jim:

Yes, I hope I get many presents!

(うん、沢山プレゼント貰えるといいなあ)

Midori:

Actually, haven’t you heard it is better to give than to receive?

(本当のところ、受けるより与える方が幸せ、って聞いた事ないの?)

Jim:

Great, so what are you getting me?

(いいねえ、それじゃあ、君は僕に何をくれるの?)

《VOL.8》

the early bird gets the worm.  早起きは三文の得

Jim:

Did you make any New Years Resolutions?

(新年の計画、立てた?)

Midori:

Well, I want to start getting up earlier.

(そうね~、私早起きしたいな)

Jim:

Why would you want to do that?

(どうしてそんな事したいの?)

Midori:

I have heard the early bird gets the worm.

(早起きは三文の得、って聞いたからよ)

《VOL.9》

love at first sight.  一目惚れ

Jim:

My mother told me that she met a nice man a few months ago.

(2~3ヶ月前に素敵な男性に会ったってママが言うんだよ)

Midori:

That is wonderful, was it love at first sight?

(あら、素晴らしい事じゃない?一目惚れしたのかしら?)

Jim:

I am just happy she is enjoying life.

(僕はただママが人生を楽しんでいることが嬉しいんだ)

Midori:

I really admire your mother’s spirit.

(私はあなたのママの(前向きな)精神を尊敬するわ)

《VOL.10》

Two peas in a pod.  瓜二つ

Jim:

It has been so warm this winter that my killifish are already waking up.

(今年も暖かくなってきたね、僕のメダカちゃんも目を覚ましてきたよ)

Midori:

How are Victoria Francis and her babies?

(ビクトリアフランシスとベビーはどう?)

Jim:

I am just happy she is enjoying life.

(元気だよ。ベビーは瓜二つだなぁ)

Midori:

To me, all killifish are peas in a pod.

(私にはどのメダカも瓜二つに見えるわ)

《VOL.11》

Easy as pie.  朝飯前 とっても簡単なこと

Jim:

What shall we do for Easter this year?

(今年の御復活祭に何しましょうか?)

Midori:

Let’s show the children how to color Easter eggs.

(子供達にイースターエッグの色付けを教えようよ)

Jim:

Is it very difficult?

(難しくない?)

Midori:

No, it’s easy as pie.

(ぜんぜん、簡単だよ)

《VOL.12》

At the drop of a hat.  すぐに~

Midori:

A few minutes ago, my mother called to ask if you could change a light bulb for her.

(ちょっと前、おかあさんから電話があって電球を換えてくれないかしら…って)

Jim:

Okay. I will go it right now.

(いいよ。すぐ行くよ)

Midori:

I appreciate you doing this at the drop of a hat.

(すぐにしてくれて感謝するわ)

Jim:

I don’t mind it will just take a minute.

(すぐ済む事だから気にならないよ)

Just around the corner.  時間/距離的にすぐそこ

Midori:

What shall we do for Father’s Day this year?

(今年の父の日には何をする?)

Jim:

We don’t need to worry about that yet.

(未だ心配しなくていいよ)

Midori:

Yes, we do. Father’s Day is just around the corner.

(いいえ、もう考えなくちゃ。父の日はもうすぐよ)

Jim:

I have a plan, let’s let your father stay home and relax.

(良い考えが有るよ。君のお父さんに何処へも行かず家でリラックスさせてあげるのはどう?)

Brand spanking new.  真新しい事

Jim:

I heard that you can make a wish on a star for Tanabata.

(聞いたのだけど、七夕にはお星様に願い事をするんだって?)

Midori:

Yes, anything you really want, just make a wish and you will get it.

(そうよ、何でも本当に欲しい物を願うと叶うのよ)

Jim:

Can I wish for something?

(僕も何かお願い事出来るかな)

Midori:

No, you already have a brand spanking new bicycle.

(駄目よ、あなたは既に真新しい自転車を買ったじゃない!)

《VOL.15》

Green light.  許可、ゴーサイン

Jim:

I want to buy the new iPhone.

(新しいiPhoneが欲しいなぁ)

Midori:

You have to get the green light from the Minister of Finance.

(大蔵大臣の許可を得なくちゃだめよ)

Jim:

Who is the Minister of Finance.

(大蔵大臣って誰?)

Midori:

Me.

(私よ)

《VOL.16》

Put Your Best Foot Forward.  ベストを尽くす

Jim:

A new semester is starting in our school.

(ウチの教室も新しい学期が始まるね)

Midori:

I am a little bit nervous.

(私ちょっとドキドキしているの)

Jim:

Don’t worry, we just need to put our best foot forward.

(心配しないで。僕たちただベストを尽くせば良いんだよ)

Midori:

That’s right!

(本当にそうね!)

《VOL.17》

Freak Out.  自分を失う程とても怖がる事

Jim:

I am looking forward to Halloween.

(ハロウィーンが楽しみだなぁ)

Midori:

Let’s make our Haunted House more scary this year.

(今年はハウンテッドハウス/お化け屋敷をもっと怖くしない?)

Jim:

Well, I don’t want any of the kids to freak out.

(そうだねえ、僕は子供たちをあまり怖がらせたくないな)

Midori:

I think they will love it.

(私は子供たちは大好きだと思うわ)

《VOL.18》

A New York Minute.  とっても早い事

Jim:

I really miss American Thanksgiving dinner.

(アメリカの感謝祭のディナーが懐かしいなぁ)

Midori:

Thanksgiving is like a New Year’s Feast in Japan because family gets together.

(感謝祭は家族が集まって御馳走を食べるので日本のお正月みたいね)

Jim:

Cooking takes such a long time, but it is so delicious I can eat it in a New York Minute.

(料理するには時間がかかるけど、あんまり美味しくてあっという間に食べちゃうよ)

Midori:

I know you can, but please eat slowly and enjoy.

(わかるわ、でもゆっくりと楽しんで食べてね)

Pulling my leg.  からかう

Midori:

I will get you the new iPhone for Christmas this year.

(今年のクリスマス、新しいiPhoneプレゼントしましょうか?)

Jim:

I can’t believe it. Please don’t pull my leg.

(信じられないよ。僕をからかわないでよ)

Midori:

No, you have been working very hard this year and you deserve it.

(からかってないわ。今年貴方は一生懸命働いたんですもの、プレゼントを貰う価値があるわ)

Jim:

Wow, this will be the best Christmas ever!

(ワ~~、今迄で一番良いクリスマスになるぞ!)

《VOL.20》

Fresh as a daisy.  とてもきれいで匂いも新しく清々しいたとえ

Midori:

In Japan we clean our houses before the new year.

(日本では新年を迎える前に家をきれいにするのよ)

Jim:

Really? In America we clean our houses in the spring.

(本当?アメリカでは春に家の大掃除をするよ)

Midori:

It is very hard work to clean the house from top to bottom.

(家の隅から隅まで大掃除するのは大変)

Jim:

I guess so, but after we finish our house will be fresh as a daisy.

(そうだね。でも掃除した後は清々しくきれいになるね)

《VOL.21》

Love is blind.    愛は盲目

Jim:

I am looking forward to Valentines Day this year.

(僕はバレンタインズデーが楽しみだな)

Midori:

Me too, can you believe we have been married for 17 years?

(私もよ。私たちが結婚してから17年なんて信じられる)

Jim:

What would you say the secret to our marriage is?

(結婚生活の秘訣って何だと思う?)

Midori:

Love is blind.

(愛は盲目、かな)

《VOL.22》

Finding your feet.   自信を持つ/自分の場をみつけて居心地良くする

Midori:

My friend’s son will graduate high school this month.

(私の友達の息子が今月卒業するのよ)

Jim:

So, he will start college life away from his parents.

(親元を離れて大学生活が始まるんだね)

Midori:

I hope he can find his feet in the new school.

(彼が新しい学校で心地よくやってくれると良いのだけど)

Jim:

I am sure he will be fine.

(彼はきっとうまくやるさ)

《VOL.23》

A frog in my throat.   のどがガラガラしている/イガイガしている状態

Jim:

Spring has come.

(春が来たね)

Midori:

How are your allergies this year?

(今年のアレルギーはどう?)

Jim:

Well, I have a little frog in my throat. 

(そうだね、のどがイガイガしているよ)

Midori:

I hope you feel better soon.

(すぐ良くなると良いわね)

《VOL.24》

Bite off more than you can chew.  手にあまる仕事をしようとする

Jim:

I can't belive that I thought I could paint the whole house.

(家を全部自分で塗れると思ったなんて信じられないよ)

Midori:

You did a very good job so far,it looks great.

(今の処迄とっても良くやったわよ。見た目も良いし)

Jim:

Well,thank you, but I am too scared to paint the top. I think I bit off more than I can chew.

(ありがとう。でも上の方を塗るのは怖いよ。思うのだけど、此れは手に余る仕事だな)

Midori:

Well, maybe we can get a professional to finish the top part.

(そうね、ペンキ屋さんに頼んで終わらせてもらいましょうか)

Rain check.  延期する

Jim:

Hey, let's go to the movies this Saturday afternoon.

(ねえ、今度の土曜日映画に行こうよ)

Midori:

I would like to, but I have an appointment to get my hair cut on Saturday.

(良いわね、でも土曜日に美容院の予約があるの)

Jim:

Well, would you like to have a rain check?

(じゃあ延期したい?)

Midori:

Yes, let's go next Saturday.

(そうね、来週の土曜日にいきましょうよ)

《VOL.26》

Tickled Pink.  とっても楽しく面白い事

Midori:

I really enjoyed your mothers visit.

(あなたのママの来日、本当に楽しかったわ)

Jim:

I think you enjoyed shopping with my mother.

(僕思うのだけど…ママと一緒に買い物楽しんだでしょう?)

Midori:

Yes, your mother really loved shopping in Japan.

(そうね、あなたのママ日本でのお買い物をとっても気に入っていたわよ)

Jim:

I think both of you were tickled pink to go shopping.

(二人共買い物に行く事を大喜びだったと思うよ)

《VOL.27》

Go the extra mile.  特別な努力をする

Midori:

can you belive it? All of our Eiken 5 challengers passed.

(信じられる?英検5級チャレンジの子が全員受かったわ)

Jim:

That is wonderful, but I am not surprised because they studied very hard.

(凄いね。でも全然驚かないよ。みんな一生懸命勉強したからね。)

Midori:

Yes, they really went the extra mile.

(ホントね、みんないつもより努力したものね)

Jim:

I am very proud of them!

(子供達の事、僕はとても誇らしいよ)

Hit the books.  一生懸命勉強する

Midori:

New semester will start this month.

(今月は新しい学期が始まるわね)

Jim:

I guess the kids are very excited to go back to school.

(子供は学校へ戻ることにワクワクドキドキしていると思うな)

Midori:

I wonder if they finished their summer assignments.

(思うのだけど…皆、夏休みの宿題終わったかしら)

Jim:

Well, if they didn't, they better hit the books before school starts.

(そうだね、もし終わっていなかったら一生懸命勉強しないとね)

Count Noses.  ({出席者の}人数を数える)

Midori:

I can't wait for Halloween!

(ハロウィーンが待ちきれないわ)

Jim:

Yes, last year was so fun.

(うん、去年は楽しかったね)

Midori:

We may have many children visiting this year again to go Trick-or-Treating with us.

(今年も又私たちとトリック オア トリートに一緒に行く子供達が沢山来てくれると思うわ)

Jim:

Yas, we will need to make sure we stop and count noses before and after our event.

(そうだね、外に行く前後にしっかり人数を確認しようね)

《VOL.30》

Icing on the cake.  (おまけ、何か良いもの)

Midori:

Halloween was a big event for our school.

(うちの教室にとってハロウィーンはビッグイベントだったわ)

Jim:

The kids really enjoyed carving the Jack-O-Lanterns.

(子供達はジャック オー ランタンを彫ったり本当に楽しんでいたね)

Midori:

Yes, then we went Trick-or-treating.

(そうね、トリック オア トリ―トへ行ったんですものね)

Jim:

That was the icing on the cake!

(大きなおまけだったね)
